Understanding Rental Car Insurance

If you have ever discussed rental car insurance with someone who travels a lot, they may have told you that rental car insurance is a rip-off and is totally unnecessary. Or, if you have discussed rental car insurance with someone, you may have been told that you should always, always purchase rental insurance - that failing to do so is a huge mistake. You need to know a little bit more about rental car insurance before you can understand which of these two opinions is true.

In all actuality, rental agencies certainly do make a profit off of the money they charge for insurance; this does not, however, automatically mean that you should skip insurance. After all, if you end up getting in a wreck with your rental car, you will not be thrilled if you are also stuck paying for the costs of the repairs on your own! At the same time, however, there is a very good chance that - even if you do not purchase rental insurance - you will not be stuck paying for the repairs!

Your own personal insurance will carry over to any rental car you drive if any of your own vehicles have complete coverage on them. If this is the case, you will be doing nothing but spending superfluous money by getting the insurance offered by the rental car company. If you get in a wreck, with your own insurance covering you, you will only have to pay the deductible - just as you would in your own car.

You should know, however, that your regular insurance will not cover you for loss of vehicle to the rental company. This means that - should you get in a really bad wreck, where the rental company cannot rent the car for several days - you will be stuck paying the rental costs for these days. Car companies offer loss of vehicle coverage, but this is also often as high as $25 per day - and might not be worth the money!

It is important that any rental car you drive is insured; but before you pay for insurance through the rental car company, check with your own insurance provider - you may already be covered, and may not need to purchase anything extra!
